While the majority of plays on the island are performed in Greek, a few children’s plays are presented in Russian. As the Christmas season draws closer, we can expect an increasing number of performances in English, catering to a more global audience.

Drama and Comedy on Stage

Among the plays being performed is a standout piece titled “Hands Up if You Want a Divorce”. This drama-comedy centered on a group of friends in their 30s, explores the intricacies of modern society, relationships and anxieties. The play has been garnering attention each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Nicosia. In December, the play will expand its reach, touring Paphos, Larnaca, and Limassol.

A Classic Fairy Tale Revisited

Hans Christian Andersen’s cherished fairy tale “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” has been brought to life on stage under the direction of Lea Maleni. The narrative, which retains its timeless appeal, is sure to engage audiences of all ages. This play will be performed at Thoc theatre every Sunday morning until March 10, with an additional show on January 3.

A Journey from Reality to Fantasy

Theatre Apothikes premieres “A Monster Calls,” a play based on the novel by Patrick Ness. This production by Youth on a deserted island, set to be first presented on November 12, explores the transition from reality to fantasy through a young hero’s mental landscape. This play promises to be an immersive experience, with emotions ranging from fear, anger, sadness, and loneliness, to warmth, understanding, and recognition.

A Tragicomic Play to Look Forward To

Towards the end of the month, “The Visit” will premiere on Thoc’s Main Stage. This 1956 tragicomic play by Swiss dramatist Friedrich Dürrenmatt is set to be presented with a fresh reading by Neophytos Taliotis. This year’s production will feature set designer Angelos Angeli, composer Michalis Christodoulidis, and a talented cast of actors, promising a memorable theatre experience.
